Powerful New Strategies for Healing the Dysfunctional

BrainThis presentation will explain how human cells defend themselves against a variety of threats. In understanding the mechanism of cellular defence we can better understand how Nutrigenomics can deal with a range of human disorders associated with abnormalities in redox balance, detoxification and other key cellular processes.

Furthermore, an enhanced understanding of cellular defence mechanisms creates a clearer path to determining why some theoretically-plausible therapeutic strategies have failed.  The potential for a targeted nutrigenomic approach not as a single intervention but as part of a broader programme to optimise the patient’s nutritional environment provides scope for advances in ASD therapy.

Following many years in private practice as a Nutritional Biochemist, Christine is currently completing doctoral research at the University of Queensland, investigating bioactive phytochemicals with significant clinical potential. In addition to her research, Christine is co-author of the courses: Foundations in Nutrigenomics and Advanced Translational Nutrigenomics. Her clinical focus lies in addressing upstream causes of disease, with unique emphasis on cardiovascular health, chemoprevention, estrogen metabolism and gastrointestinal health.

Christine’s forte lies in taking complex biochemical concepts and translating their essence into concepts relevant to the needs of practising clinicians and their patients.  Her peer-reviewed publications include two Review papers on Sulforaphane, the bioactive compound derived from broccoli sprouts.  She is also the author of “Switched On – Harnessing the Power of Nutrigenomics to Optimise Your Health”.

Becoming a part of the Solution:

Reducing toxic exposure and building resilience, One Bite at a Time

Pesticides, plastics, cosmetics, fragrances, heavy metals, brominated flame-retardants,

dioxin, methyl mercury, parabens, triclosan, vinyl, phthalates, bisphenol A and other industrial chemicals are regularly detected in the blood and tissue of our freshly birthed babies, young children and people of all ages. The effects of accumulative chemical exposures on human reproduction and human development are already debilitating, and future generations are likely to be exposed to even greater risk. Cancers, congenital malformations, diabetes, allergies, immune disorders, obesity, autism, and neurological and

behavioural impairments are the direct result of the interplay between our genes, nutrition, and the industrial pollutants to which we are exposed – yet there is a massive void in public awareness as to how harmful chemicals accumulate and impact our health, as well as where they are found. This evidence based talk exposing the latest research will build your clinical understanding and confidence in applying the concrete steps that you & your clients can take to minimise hazardous exposures, maximise health, and build a better world for our next generations to come.

Key learning points:

  • What is the current state of affairs re: birthing pre-polluted babies
  • Evidence of harm: a quick review of the latest Environmental research
  • The toxins that threaten reproduction, neuro-development, and the next generation
  • Issues of toxicity-transfer
  • Strong foundations – preconception, pregnancy, and beyond
  • Simple strategies for becoming a part of the Solution
  • Maximising resilience for better outcomes

John Smartt, Osteo

Osteopathic treatment for improving the gut function of people with brain-gut conditions

Gut issues are often present with brain conditions, and may present with symptoms including: inadequate chew leading to gagging leading to vomiting; wind issues or abdominal pain; textural issues about food leading to a narrow range of foods eaten; anxiety disturbing transit; leaky gut due to altered gut flora; control issues leading to problems with toileting; and slow or fast gut (movements over 3 times per day and up to 10 days between bowel motions).]

There is a chicken-and-egg question about whether the central nervous system (CNS) function drives the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) issues, the GIT issues drive the CNS issues, or something else drives both problems. It is probably a complex vicious cycle that presents differently with different people, which needs a multi-faceted approach to unravel it for each patient.  Clinical experience and outcome studies indicate that osteopathic treatment can play a positive role in this mix; particularly through its influence on gut function.

John Smartt practices Osteopathy in Sydney’s CBD where he specialises in treating brain-gut conditions.  He has had a longterm and passionate interest in the autistic spectrum having seen excellent results in his own extended family and also has a passion for helping anyone who has not been able to get the healthcare they want.
